Paddy Hartley and StudioShim

Paddy Hartley is the artist behind StudioShim. With a 35 year background in multidisciplinary art and a Masters Degree in Ceramics from University of Wales Institute Cardiff (97/98), he brings a unique perspective to ceramics, blending traditional craftsmanship with experimental processes, often defying convention in his making process.

StudioShim is the moniker under which his studio ceramic practice reflects the inspiration of the rugged beauty of the Northumbrian coast and the rich history of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Each collection and each piece is a response to the textures, forms, landmarks and natural elements of this striking landscape, reflecting the interplay between land, sea, sky, Sun and Moon. His work captures the essence of erosion, weathering, geological and meteorological transformation—echoing the way time, tide and the elements shape the coastline. Each vessel, sculpture, and form is created to be both visually striking and tactile, inviting a connection between object and observer and resonance with those familiar with the Northumbrian coast. Whether inspired by the Ice pancakes on the River Tweed, tidal currents, or ancient geology, Paddy’s ceramics embody a sense of place, history, and quiet resilience. Paddy’s ceramic work is widely exhibited both in the UK and internationally.

His work is collected extensively in private, public and corporate collections, most notably by Pharmaceutical company F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG, Switzerland. Roche are custodians of over 200 of his works in ceramic. Further works are collected by The Museum of Arts and Design New York, Riga strains University Latvia, Wellcome Collection London and The National Collection Norway.
